Jinan University in Guangzhou recently hosted a seminar on the modern development of overseas Chinese culture, bringing together scholars, writers, and cultural representatives from across China. The event served as a platform for open discussion on how to preserve, promote, and adapt the cultural heritage of overseas Chinese communities in today's world.
Representatives from Taishan in Guangdong province, a city known for its deep overseas Chinese roots, shared the city's recent achievements in literature and cultural development. In recent years, local writers and artists have produced more than 40 works focusing on Taishan's history, culture, and connection to the world. The city has also collected over 100 works by well-known overseas Chinese authors such as You Jin, Liu Huangtian, and Lilian Lee.
Taishan has made cultural development one of its priorities, supporting local writers through funding programs and promoting reading as part of everyday life. Events like author talks, public reading campaigns, and book promotions are helping to create a strong reading culture and bring literature closer to the community.
During their visit in Guangzhou, Taishan delegates also toured the Overseas Chinese Archives at Jinan University Library. Opened in 2020, the archive is a major resource for research on the history and contributions of overseas Chinese communities. With exhibits on migration, business, education, media, and literature, the center uses multimedia and interactive displays to tell the rich story of Chinese communities around the world.
